It happened again. Indian captain Virat Kohli lost another toss in the ongoing Test series between England and India. Kohli is yet to win a single toss in a Test match in England. In 2021 alone, Kohli has lost three consecutive tosses since his arrival. He didn’t have any luck in the ICC World Test Championship final against New Zealand and his bad luck followed him to Trent Bridge.
With that loss of the toss at Trent Bridge, Kohli went past MS Dhoni. The former Indian skipper had lost 34 tosses during his captaincy tenure in the longest format of the game, while Kohli now has 36 tosses which he has lost.
Interestingly enough, he had lost each and every toss during the five-match Test series between the two countries back in 2018. In total, Kohli has led India in eight Test matches in England (including the ongoing one at Lord’s) and lost all the tosses.
Kohli has won only one toss in last 11 Tests against England
Twitter fans pointed out Kohli’s terrible record at the tosses. As a matter of fact, in the last 11 Tests between India and England (including the matches played in India), Kohli has won only one toss while losing the 10. On Thursday, as Joe Root won another toss, there was cheeky eye contact between the two captains with Kohli smiling in the end.
India made only one change with Ishant Sharma coming into the side in place of Shardul Thakur. Kohli had informed the press a day ahead of the start of the second Test about Thakur’s hamstring issues which forced India to bring in Sharma. There was an element of surprise as Ravichandran Ashwin was left out of the XI once again with India choosing Ravindra Jadeja as a spin-bowling option.
Root decided to bowl first and said the decision was taken keeping in mind the overcast conditions which might help English bowlers to make early in-roads. Kohli said that he would have liked to bowl first but he also told that it was an opportunity to put a big total on the board early for the batsmen.
Here is what Twitter had to say about Kohli’s toss record:
I don't understand why Kohli goes for the toss. Send someday else and we might win atleast one toss if not the match!
