The controversial tales of Sunrisers Hyderabad and David Warner took a new turn on September 27, after the southpaw did not show up at the venue for his team’s encounter against Sanju Samson’s Rajasthan Royals.

Warner, who endured a terrible run of form in the Indian leg of the tournament, was sacked as SRH’s captain midway through, with Kane Williamson named as his replacement. He was also dropped from the XI, coincidentally against Rajasthan Royals earlier this year in a clash which eventually proved to be the penultimate fixture before the season had to be suspended owing to the emergence of Covid-19 cases.

Warner was drafted back into the team once the season resumed in the United Arab Emirates but could only add two more runs to his 2021 IPL tally, which read 193 runs from six innings before the UAE leg. He made a gloomy start against Delhi Capitals on September 22 in Dubai, recording a three-ball duck, while that was followed by a three-ball two against Punjab Kings in Sharjah.

Despite not being a part of the XI, what was strange was his absence at the Dubai International Stadium on September 27, which neither Kevin Pietersen nor Sunil Gavaskar were able to fathom. “Even if he not playing, he needs to be here. Chris Gayle was not playing on his birthday, but he was seen giving interviews,” Pietersen told broadcasters.

At the toss, SRH captain Kane Williamson confirmed that Warner has been replaced by English batter Jason Roy, who last played IPL in 2018 and has 179 runs at 29.83 in his eight-match IPL career.

Roy, who was picked by SRH earlier this year as Australia all-rounder Mitchell Marsh’s replacement , was recently active in the inaugural edition of The Hundred, where he aggregated 168 runs in seven innings for Oval Invincibles, striking at 148.80. Meanwhile, Roy was only one of the four changes made by SRH, with Priyam Garg, Abhishek Sharma are Sidharth Kaul coming in at the expense of Manish Pandey, Kedar Jadhav and Khaleel Ahmed.

SRH, who are teetering at the bottom of the table, having lost eight of their nine completed fixtures hitherto, are as good as knocked out of the tournament, with their unbroken Playoff qualification streak running since 2016 coming to an end after a poor season.
