DPL 2021: Sabbir Rahman fined BDT 50,000 for racially abusing Elias Sunny

Cricket Committee of Dhaka Metropolis (CCDM) has imposed a fine of BDT 50,000 on legends of Rupganj batsman Sabbir Rahman who indulged in a series of unacceptable behaviour. Rahman racially abused Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi club player Elias Sunny and pelted stones on him on Wednesday, June 16. The CCDM conducted a meeting to discuss the matter. The meeting was attended by many people to reach a satisfactory conclusion.

The meeting saw the presence of Elias, Rahman, and Sheikh Jamal’s manager Sultan Mahmud. Mahmud has also been fined with an equal amount and Elias was given a warning by the concerned authorities. Earlier, CCDM stated that Sunny and his side were not able to prove Rahman guilty on the basis of racial abuse.

As the guilt couldn’t be proved, both parties were punished for the inconvenience created. The incident took place on June 16, Wednesday at Bangladesh Sports Education Institute (BKSP) ground. Rahman was alleged of racially abusing Elias and throwing stones at him during a match between Sheikh Jamal and OLD DOHS.

It can be seen that in the recent day, the DPL is facing several odds and grabbing headlines for the wrong reasons. It was only a few days back when star cricketer Shakib Al Hasan got agitated on a matter and indulged in a furious conversation with on-field umpires. He went on to uproot the stumps also and later got fined and a three-match ban. However, he later issued a public apology for his unacceptable temperament.

“Dear fans and followers, I am extremely sorry for losing my temper and ruining the match for everyone and especially those who are watching from home. An experienced player like me should not have reacted that way but sometimes against all odds it happens, unfortunately.

“I apologise to the teams, management, tournament officials, and organizing committee for this human error. Hopefully, I won’t be repeating this again in future. Thanks and love you all,” his statement read.
