DRS saves Evin Lewis from what could’ve been a bizarre dismissal in Dhaka
Lewis couldn’t make use of the reprieve though.
The Sher-E-Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka was a witness to a high-scoring affair between Bangladesh and Windies. Even as the hosts racked up 211 in 20 overs, Carlos Brathwaite and Co tried their hearts out but fell short by 36 runs. Amidst some marvellous performance by the batters, a few of them couldn’t get going, one of them was swashbuckling Windies opening batsmen Evin Lewis.
He started well in Sylhet, scoring 18 from 11 balls and fell prey to Mohammad Saifuddin. His campaign turned from bad to worse as he could only manage one run in six balls in Dhaka after which left-arm speedster Abu Hider Rony accounted for his wicket. The batsman tried to play an uppish flick, but couldn’t get under the ball properly and hence, he got the elevation and not distance.
Evin Lewis survives a scare
Liton Das, patrolling the mid-wicket region, didn’t make any mistake in grasping the ball. In the meantime, there was a bizarre incident surrounding the Trinidad-born cricketer. In the very first over, the on-field umpire adjudged Lewis Leg Before Wicket (LBW). A relatively full delivery from Rony kept low and caught Lewis napping. He went on to the backfoot following which he was given out.
Subsequently, Lewis started walking, but Shai Hope, at the non-striker’s end, stopped his partner. Hope advised him to take the Decision Review System (DRS) and the dismissal went upstairs to third-umpire Sharfuddoula. Replays showed that the ball hit the bottom of the bat and didn’t even touch the pad. Even Sinckometre showed a massive spike, which proved that the decision was wrong.
The on-field umpire had to alter his decision and Lewis would’ve breathed a sigh of relief. Lewis couldn’t make use of the reprieve though. After his dismissal, the likes of Rovman Powell, Rovman Powell, and Keemo Paul played some quick-fire knocs, but their efforts went in vain. All-rounder Shakib Al Hasan scored 42 runs and picked up a five-wicket haul to inflict mayhem in the Windies camp.
