DRS – The Dhoni Review System in numbers

The Decision Review System (DRS) has been abbreviated as the Dhoni Review System by the fans and experts, given the recent instances of the Indian wicketkeeper’s accurate judgments for taking a review whenever India’s appeals are turned down by the umpires. The numbers also suggest the same as India have made seven successful reviews out of the nine this year in MS Dhoni’s presence.

The two unsuccessful calls were taken out of anxiety by the current Indian captain Virat Kohli, who once referred a caught behind little before Dhoni gave his version and once in the last part of opposition’s innings. It is not that Dhoni mastered the art of executing successful reviews straight away as he too had some tough times like his successor at the start with this technology.

The first taste of the DRS for the former India skipper was in the 2011 World Cup and on the following tour of England. Across the two assignments, Dhoni, then captain, chose to review on 14 occasions but their tries were successful only on three occasions. The 11 unsuccessful reviews in that year include a couple of umpire’s calls which were declined by the famous 2.5 meters rule.

For the next five years, India played with the DRS technology only in the ICC ODI tournaments; the Champions Trophy 2013 and World Cup in 2015. Dhoni made a comparably better judgment while taking the reviews this time as three of the five reviews they opted across both the tournaments were successful. The two unsuccessful ones include an umpire’s call on lbw and another by Suresh Raina, who managed to convince his skipper after taking a catch at leg gully.

India opted for reviews 28 times while fielding in Dhoni’s presence so far and only 13 were overturned. Among the 28, India used 15 of those calls for lbws, out of which seven went in their favour. The Indian team took 11 reviews for caught behind with Dhoni as the keeper but interestingly, only six of them turned out to be successful. All the four reviews Dhoni took for caught behind in 2011 were unsuccessful but since 2013, India made the umpires change their decisions six times out of seven when they reviewed after Dhoni claimed a catch.
