Duane Olivier, Lungi Ngidi added to South Africa squad for second Test

Following Dale Steyn’s heel injury that he sustained during the Cape Town Test has eventually ruled him out of the entire series against India, South Africa have added the fast bowling duo of Duanne Olivier and uncapped 21-year-old Lungi Ngidi to their squad for the second Test against the visitors later this week.

Olivier has played five Tests – all of them in 2017 – and Ngidi made his international debut in a T20I against Sri Lanka last year but is yet to play the other two formats at the international stage. The second Test starts on January 13 in Centurion.

One forced change

The hosts were favourites before the series begun and after a thrilling match, they began to steal the victory against the visitors and now lead 1-0 in the three-match series. Apart from the forced change in place of Steyn, it is unlikely that South Africa will change their winning XI. However, we can them expect to bring in one all-rounder in place of spinner Keshav Maharaj considering spin may not have a role to play in Centurion.

India, on the other hand, will have to re-think the combination they go in with and see whether they want to risk going in with the same team or bringing in KL Rahul in place of Shikhar Dhawan and fit in Ajinkya Rahane by either playing him in place of Rohit Sharma or in place of Ravichandran Ashwin.

Dale Steyn will be out of action for four to six weeks and will be re-assessed by the end of that period. He was seen on crutches in the morning and post the match but came to bat when South Africa needed him to, in the second innings.
