Situated at the Northern end of the Maidan in Kolkata, the iconic Eden Gardens was named after Emily and Fanny Eden, the sisters of Lord Auckland, Governor-General from 1836-1842. It was also the first few stadiums in India where flood lights and gigantic electronic scoreboard were installed.
Initially called the 'Auckland Circus Gardens' in 1841, it was later renamed to the Eden Gardens which is famously known today. The stadium underwent renovation twice since its inception, once in 1987 and then in 2011 for the ODI World Cup.

The deck at the Eden Gardens Stadium usually aids the batters. As the boundary size is not too big, batters have an edge to get the big runs. Pacers tend to obtain some bounce, however, spinners play an important role towards the latter phase of the match.
Rohit Sharma recorded the highest individual ODI score in the history of the sport, 264 against Sri Lanka in 2014. In the IPL, Rajat Patidar slammed the highest-ever individual score with 112 (54 balls) for RCB, against LSG in 2022.
Kuldeep Yadav became the third bowler for India to take a hat-trick in an ODI against Australia after Chetan Sharma and Kapil Dev on 21 September 2017 at this venue. The Eden Gardens has also been in the eye of controversies as occurred in the 1996 World Cup semi-final. India slumped to 120 for 8 while chasing 252 against Sri Lanka, after a dramatic collapse during which seven wickets fell for 22. The vociferous crowd began hurling bottles on the field and setting fires in the stands.
Despite the small dimensions, RCB recorded the lowest ever total in the IPL at this venue as they were dismissed for 49 runs against the home side KKR on April 23, 2017.
