'End of a golden era' - Babar Azam mourns Lata Mangeshkar's demise

Mangeshkar passed away at the age of 92.

Veteran singer Lata Mangeshkar passed away on Sunday (February 6) and condolences are coming in from different quarters. Her physician, Dr. Pratit Samdani, said that the iconic singer died of multiple organ failure at Breach Candy hospital in Mumbai. Pakistancricket team captain Babar Azam also took to Twitter and paid tribute to Mangeshkar, who passed away at the age of 92.

Notably, Mangeshkar had tested positive for COVID-19 with mild symptoms and was subsequently admitted on January 8 at the Breach Candy Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU), where Dr Pratit Samdani-led team of doctors was treating her. Some earlier reports had suggested that Mangeshkar was recovering well but she eventually breathed his last on Sunday. Babar Azam was among many to mourn the legendary singer’s demise.

“End of a golden era. Her magical voice and legacy will continue to live in the hearts of millions worldwide. An unparalleled icon! RIP Smt. Lata Mangeshkar Ji,” tweeted Babar. Meanwhile, India declared two days of national mourning following Mangeshkar’s demise. The singer was also given a state funeral before being cremated in Mumbai on Sunday evening. The country’s flags will fly at half-staff.

Meanwhile, Babar isn’t the only cricketer to react to the sad piece of news. Earlier in the day, former Indian captain Virat Kohli had also expressed his condolences, saying her melodious songs touched millions of people.

“Deeply saddened to hear about the demise of Lata ji. Her melodious songs touched millions of people around the world. Thank you for all the music and the memories. My deepest condolences to the family & the loved ones,” tweeted the 33-year-old.

In order to pay respect to the singing sensation, members of the Rohit Sharma-led Indian cricket team are sporting black armbands in the first ODI against the West Indies in Ahmedabad.

“The Indian Cricket Team is wearing black armbands today to pay their respects to Bharat Ratna Smt Lata Mangeshkar ji, who left for her heavenly abode on Sunday morning. The queen of melody, Lata didi loved cricket, always supported the game and backed Team India,” tweeted the official page of BCCI.
