Team India head coach Rahul Dravid is known to be a reserved person, and there have not been many instances of him expressing raw emotions on or off the field. But Friday evening was different as he witnessed Rishabh Pant’s fiery and counterattacking Test ton which made him jump off his chair and delve into celebrations along with the other players.

Rishabh Pant played a tremendous knock under pressure in the fifth rescheduled Test of the Pataudi Trophy. Top-order batters Shubman Gill, Cheteshwar Pujara, and Hanuma Vihari were dismissed quickly and the visitors were in a spot of bother. Nonetheless, Pant rebuilt the innings alongside Ravindra Jadeja as the duo added 222 runs, India’s highest sixth-wicket stand against England.

Dravid sprang up from the chair and raised both hands in celebration while watching the match intently from the dressing room, as Pant finished the second run to reach the 100-run benchmark. The head coach appeared to be impatiently awaiting the occasion as he jubilantly applauded Rishabh Pant’s achievement, who reached the mark in just 89 balls.

With his quick hundred for India, Rishabh helped the visitors escape a risky scenario. When he stepped out in the middle, the Jasprit Bumrah-led team was struggling at 64/3. As the young wicketkeeper-batter was on a roll, Jadeja took it slow on his part and let the wicketkeeper-batter do the power-hitting. Soon after Pant’s century, Jadeja also reached his half-century.

Rishabh Pant and Ravindra Jadeja’s knock saved the day for India

Speaking of the game, the hosts had command over the game in the beginning as James Anderson and Matthew Potts scalped two wickets each to reduce India to 71/4 in the 25th over. The experienced Anderson got his third in the form of Shreyas Iyer. Pant and Jadeja taking charge of the game at such a critical situation was exactly what the Indian team required.

Before being caught by Zak Crawley off Joe Root’s delivery, Pant managed to score a whopping 146 runs off 111 deliveries. Additionally, an unbeaten 83*(163) from Jadeja helped India end the first day at 338/7. Jadeja will be eyeing to bag his third Test century, but he will require the lower-order batters to provide the right assistance from the other end.
