India skipper Rohit Sharma roared back to form with a brilliant half-century in the first One Day International against England at the Kennington Oval in London on Tuesday, July 12. However, one of his trademark pull shots struck a young fan in the stands, which halted the game for a while as she was attended by the physios of the England cricket team.

The incident happened in the fifth over of the Indian chase where a delivery bowled by left-arm pacer David Willey was strongly pulled by Sharma, which made its way into the crowd at the fine leg region. The play was immediately halted for a while when a man was seen consoling a little girl in the stands after the latter was struck by the ball.

The kid received immediate medical attention and play resumed shortly indicating that all was well and nothing untoward happened. Even after play resumed, Rohit continued his onslaught on the English bowlers and left them shell-shocked in an easy run chase.

Meanwhile, it has been learnt that the Indian skipper visited the six-year-old Meera. “Shoutout to the @englandcricket physios yesterday. 6 year-old Meera was hit by a Rohit Sharma six in the crowd and they quickly rushed round to check on her. She was okay and even received a visit off Sharma himself later in the day!” wrote Barmy Army on Twitter.

The ‘Hitman’ scored an unbeaten 76 runs from 58 deliveries and found good support in opener Shikhar Dhawan (31*) as the duo’s 114-run opening stand helped the Men in Blue get over the line by 10 wickets in just the 19th over. By virtue of this emphatic win, India took a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

This was all possible courtesy of pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah‘s brilliant figures of 6/19 from his 7.2 overs, including three maidens. His spell ensured that the hosts were bundled out for just 110. India would now be hoping to seal the series in the second ODI at the ‘Home of Cricket’ Lord’s on Thursday, July 14.
