After showcasing not-so-impressive performances in the three T20Is, Indian skipper Rohit Sharma roared back to form in the first One Day International against England at the Kennington Oval in London on Tuesday, July 12. He scored a morale-boosting half-century as the Men in Blue registered a comprehensive 10-wicket win to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.
While Rohit went on a rampage against the England bowlers, the play was forced to be halted briefly after his aggressive six ended up hurting a spectator in the stands. The ball struck a young girl hard and she looked in discomfort for a while. Luckily, nothing untoward happened and the play resumed.
The event happened in the fifth over of the Indian chase. The delivery was bowled by left-arm pacer David Willey and he was clobbered into the stands by Rohit. After the on-field umpire signaled a six, the cameras focused on the crowd where a man was seen consoling a little girl after she was struck.
The play was stopped for a while to check whether the girl suffered any injuries. Meanwhile, commentators Ravi Shastri and former English skipper Michael Atherton hinted that a person had indeed got hurt in the stands.
“It seems someone in the crowd may have gotten hit by this six from Rohit Sharma. Fingers crossed… nobody is hurt,” said Atherton.
“Yes, looks that way. The way Rohit is looking towards that area, he might have got the message it’s probably hit someone,” Shastri added.

The girl got some medical attention and the match resumed after a short interval which indicated that all was well. Rohit went on to score an unbeaten 76 runs from 58 deliveries and found great support in Shikhar Dhawan, who contributed with an unbeaten 31 off 54. The duo added 114 runs for the opening stand as India completed the formalities in the 19th over itself.
Meanwhile, the duo also created a new record to their name in this contest as they completed 5,000 runs as Indian openers and joined this elite list featuring former captain Sourav Ganguly and Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar.
