Former England skipper Joe Root showed his true character in the first Test match against New Zealand. The right-handed batter scored an excellent hundred in the fourth innings and sealed the game for his team. The wicketkeeper-batter Ben Foakes also played a good hand and stitched a vital partnership with Root.

While Root scored an excellent hundred, a video of him standing at the non-striker’s end is going viral on social media platforms. In the video, Root can be seen standing without his hand bat in hand, but somehow the bat was levitating without any support from the batter.

During the course of the match, Root broke some records as well as he became the first England player to cross the 17,000-run mark in the international circuit. Not only that, but the former England skipper also became the second English batter after Sir Alastair Cook to complete 10,000 in the Test format. Talking about Root’s numbers in Test cricket, the 31-year-old has so far played 118 Test matches and has scored 10,015 runs at an excellent average of almost 50.

Coming to the first Test match, the visitors were bundled out after scoring just 132 runs in their first innings. However, the New Zealand side led by pacer Kyle Jamieson and Tim Southee made a comeback in the match and restricted the home side to just 141 runs in their first innings. In the second innings, a hundred from the Kiwi batter Daryl Mitchell and an excellent 96-run knock from the wicketkeeper-batter Tom Blundell meant that the visitors scored 285 runs.

The Three Lions faced some trouble during the start of their second innings. However, healthy contributions from former skipper Root, current captain Ben Stokes and Foakes ensured that England win the first Test match by five wickets. England will now take on New Zealand in the second Test match of the series, starting on June 10.
