Ben Stokes hasn’t had the best of times in the last few months or so. His horrendous runs started with a physical altercation at a nightclub. Thereafter, he went under the radar of police investigation following which he was suspended by the English team management from representing the national side. He was initially included in England’s squad for the Ashes, but was left out of the prestigious tournament.
The all-rounder arrived in New Zealand to play for Canterbury, which sparked rumours of his comeback to the English team. He was dismissed for a duck in his first innings, but impressed with a whirlwind knock 93 runs of 47 balls against the Otago Volts. However, Canterbury have confirmed that the Christchurch-born cricketer is returning to the United Kingdom owing to family reasons.
Jeremy Curwin, Canterbury chief executive, seemed elated at Stokes’ stint with the New Zealand domestic team. “Ben has been great around the club, the team and the staff, We can’t fault his attitude or his all-round contribution in his time with us and we are sorry that he couldn’t stay with us for longer but Ben knows that he will always find a welcome here should the opportunity arise for him to return ” Curwin remarked.
A healthy stint for Stokes
Ben Stokes has also expressed his gratitude to the domestic team for throughout being a courteous host. “I have thoroughly enjoyed training and playing with Canterbury, Everyone here has gone out of their way to make me feel at home. It’s a wonderful club and I couldn’t have asked for any more from my time here.” Stokes said.
The English cricketer has been added to the squad for the One Day International series against Australia. However, his chance of participation hangs in the balance as English cricket awaits the results of the police investigation. For the time being, England is struggling to find any sort of momentum and Stokes’ would have been a vital force to the side.
