England and Wales Cricket Board announced a 14-member strong squad for their three-match ODI series against the Netherlands that is scheduled to begin on June 17. Eoin Morgan, the 2019 World Cup-winning captain, will be in charge of the team when the English cricketers take on the Dutch cricketers.
Uncapped players Luke Wood of Lancashire and David Payne of Gloucestershire have been chosen for the team. While this is Wood’s maiden call-up to the senior team, Payne was named in the ODI squad against Pakistan last summer. Northampton’s Sam Curran will be back into action after a prolonged break from the game owing to his injury.
“I’m very excited to be coaching a strong squad for my first series in charge. We have tremendous depth with a blend of youth and experience. We want to continue to play in an expressive style and let our players showcase their skills and firepower. Luke Wood deserves his call-up. He has been consistent for Lancashire over the past 12 months and we have been monitoring his progression. If given a chance to play, I’m sure he will make most of his opportunity,” Matthew Mott, England’s white-ball Head Coach, was quoted by ECB.
The three matches of the series will be part of the ICC Cricket World Cup Super League as the tour kicks off a busy summer for England Men, who will face India and South Africa later this summer. The hosts will have the benefit of playing on their own turf since they are currently playing the Caribbean team in an ODI series at the same venue, but the visitors will aim to outclass them.
“This is a historic occasion for the sport and the first time England has played The Netherlands in an ODI series. We can’t wait to head over to Amsterdam and put on a show for the thousands of fans travelling to support the team. The ODI side has had limited opportunities and last played in July. However, with about 18 months to the next ICC 50 over World Cup in India, our preparation will start ramping up with nine matches over the summer and a busy winter ahead against strong opponents,” Mott added.
