England captain Joe Root wins eight Test toss in a row; Ravi Ashwin cracks joke on Twitter
The last time Root lost a toss was in the second of the two Tests played against Pakistan at Lord's.
Has England Test captain Joe Root seen Bollywood blockbuster ‘Sholay’? If he has, Root will understand why he is in the news at the moment. Like the famous coin of the flick which had always given a verdict in favour of one of the protagonists Jai, Root is also having a grand run in the Test arena as he has now won a series of consecutive tosses, a record which even supersedes his team’s near-perfect performance in Tests.
Like the previous two Tests, Root won the toss on Friday at the Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo where England and Sri Lanka started playing the third Test of the series. The series has already been decided with England winning the first two matches by 211 and 57 runs, respectively, and they have registered a Test series win on the Sri Lankan soil for the first time since 2000-01.
‘Check the coins’, advises Ashwin jokingly
Indian off-spinner, who is waiting to catch the flight to Australia for the four-Test series starting December 6, brought Root’s unique record to everybody’s notice and posted a hilarious tweet asking the match referees to check the coins for the toss before their use.
Root won all five tosses against India in the series England played at home before their tour of Sri Lanka though they won four games and lost one. After he lost the fifth battle of the luck, Indian captain Virat Kohli said the only way he could win the toss is by having heads on both sides. In England, Root flipped the coin as the host captain while in Sri Lanka, he made the calling.
Root has actually won eight tosses in a row now
Root actually now has eight tosses going to his favour since the first Test against India. The last time Root lost a toss was in the second of the two Tests played against Pakistan at Lord’s.
England next play the Windies in their den with the tour comprising three Tests, five ODIs and three T20Is.
