In a big blow for the England Women’s team, skipper Heather Knight is unsure to lead her side in the upcoming Commonwealth Games (CWG) 2022 due to a hip injury. The senior batter sustained the injury during the first T20I encounter against South Africa.

As a result, Knight missed the second T20I match on July 23 and is also set to miss the final T20I encounter as a precaution. Despite missing their permanent skipper, Team England under the leadership of stand-in captain Nat Sciver has already secured the series and will look to win the final match as well.

Heather Knightwill miss the third T20I against South Africa

“Heather Knight has irritation in her hip joint. She has had an injection and will continue to be assessed and treated ahead of the Commonwealth Games. She will miss today’s third T20I as a precaution,” England women’s team manager said while providing an update on Knight’s injury.

Knight is one of the most successful skippers to lead the England women’s team. The English side, under her leadership, went on to win the 2017 World Cup at the Lord’s Cricket Ground after defeating Team India by nine runs, but they could not retain their title in 2022 after Australia went on to win the 50-over World Cup this time.

Talking about the CWG 2022, the English side is placed in Group B alongside Sri Lanka, New Zealand, and South Africa. Meanwhile, Team India are placed in Group A with Australia, Barbados, and Pakistan. It will be the first time that women’s cricket will be seen in the CWG with all the matches to be played in the 20-over format.

Meanwhile, the England team has already announced its squad for the upcoming tournament and will back themselves to win a medal.

England’s CWG squad: Heather Knight (c), Nat Sciver (vc), Maia Bouchier, Katherine Brunt, Alice Capsey, Kate Cross, Freya Davies, Sophia Dunkley, Sophie Ecclestone, Sarah Glenn, Amy Jones, Freya Kemp, Bryony Smith, Issy Wong, Danni Wyatt.
