Stuart Broad had a wonderful day in the opening day of the 2019 Ashes. The fast bowler picked up openers David Warner and Cameron Bancroft and didn’t look back. Though Steve Smith stole the show on Day one at the Edgbaston in Birmingham, Broad picked up a five-wicket haul. In fact, he got rid of Smith for 144 to accomplish the milestone and bowl the Aussies out for 284 in 80.4 overs.

Broad will be looking to put up more impressive shows going forward in the high-profile series. In the meantime, the 33-year-old speedster picked his all-time Ashes eleven. To start with, he picked Chris Broad, his father and also a current match referee as his opening batter. As the other opening batsman, Broad picked Sir Alastair Cook, England’s leading run-scorer in Test Cricket.

Two current cricketers in Broad’s team

Cook has over 12,000 runs in the format. At number three, Broad went for Jonathan Trott, who ended his Test career with an average of 44.08. The swashbuckling Kevin Pietersen is Broad’s number four in the lineup. Broad picked Joe Root, the present Three Lions’ Test skipper, at number five. Root has 16 tons in Tests and has arguably been one of the Brits’ most reliable batter.

Broad went for former wicketkeeper Matt Prior in his eleven. Prior finished his career with 4,099 runs and seven centuries. In the bowling department, Broad selected the legendary Shane Warne, who is currently the second-highest wicket-taker in Tests with 708 scalps. Warne had the potential to extract turn from any sort of strip and that made him a lethal prospect to deal with.

Graeme Swann, the cricketer turned commentator, is Broad’s second spinner in the lineup. Andrew Flintoff, who had the ability to destroy opposition on his day with both bat and ball, was Broad’s all-rounder. Glenn McGrath and James Anderson are Broad’s specialist fast bowlers. Anderson is playing the ongoing Ashes and is presently the all-time leading wicket-taker amongst pacers.

Last year, he got past McGrath to accomplish the milestone. Thereafter, the 37-year-old has been plagued by a number of injuries. Recently, he recovered from a calf-injury but again pulled a muscle in the opening day of the first Test against Australia.
