England might not have been happy getting bowled for 458 starting the day at 357/5 but their bowlers ensured it was a good day on the field for the home side. South Africa were 4 down for 104 but a 99-run stand between Temba Bavuma and Theunis de Bruyn for the 5th wicket rescued them before de Bruyn eventually fell in the closing minutes. Earlier, Joe Root got out for 190 adding 6 runs to his overnight score but a fifty from Stuart Broad helped England go past the 450-run mark.

Here we look at all the stats and records created during the day’s play.

7 – Moeen Ali became the 7th England player to score 2000 runs and 100 wickets in Test cricket. He is the 2nd fastest (38) among the seven to do the double after Tony Grieg (37 matches).

10 – Run-rate of Stuart Broad and James Anderson’s 47-run partnership for the 10th wicket; only the 10th stand in Test cricket of 25 and more balls with a run-rate of 10 or higher. (Based on available data)

38 – Matches Moeen Ali needed to complete the double of 2000 runs and 100 wickets in Test cricket. Only 4 players took fewer games than Moeen to complete this double. Shakib Al Hasan got the double in 31 Tests; the fastest among the 4 players.

65 – Number of innings Stuart Broad had played without a fifty in Test cricket coming into this game. His last Test fifty came in 2013 Ashes at Nottingham.

100 – Wickets Moeen Ali has taken in Test cricket so far; he is the 7th off-spinner from England to take 100 wickets in Tests.

190 – Joe Root’s innings of 190 is the 4th highest individual score for a player in his maiden Test as a captain. Only two players have scored a double ton on captaincy debut.

190 – Joe Root’s 190 is the highest score for an England captain against South Africa in Test cricket. He went past Michael Atherton’s 185* in 1995 at Johannesburg.

2012 – Last time James Anderson hit a six in Test cricket before this game was in 2012 in Dubai against Pakistan. His six off Kagiso Rabada in this game is only the 3rd six he has hit in Tests.
