England took an inaccessible 2-1 lead in the 4-match Test series with a huge 239-run margin against South Africa in the historic 100th Test at The Oval. England set a 492-run target in front of the visitors who lost their 4 wickets for just 52 runs but fought nearly one and a half sessions before Moeen Ali’s hat-trick ended Dean Elgar’s resistance and wrapped things up.

Here we look at all the stats and records created during the last two days’ of the Test.

4 – Number of golden ducks in South Africa’s 2nd innings; the most in a Test inning. South Africa records the first ever instance where 4 batsmen were dismissed for golden ducks in a Test inning.

7 – Number of players including Ben Stokes who have scored a century, picked up three wickets and pocketed 4 catches all in a Test. The last player to do the triple was Jacques Kallis in 2012 against Sri Lanka where he scored a double century, picked 3 wickets and took 6 catches.

8 – Wickets Toby Roland-Jones has picked up in this Test; he is the 28th England player to take 8 or more wickets on Test debut. The last player was James Kirtley in 2003 also against South Africa at Nottingham.

9 – Number of consecutive Tests in which Joe Root has registered a fifty-plus score; the joint 2nd most by any England player. Alec Stewart also scored fifty-plus scores in 9 successive Tests while John Edrich had registered a fifty-plus score in 10 consecutive Tests.

48 – Runs Toby Roland-Jones scored in this match; the 5th most by any player on Test debut who picked 8 or more wickets. Albert Trott amassed 110 runs on his Test debut and picked 8 wickets.

After that Test, they were bowled out in 6 of the 13 times in the 4th innings without an individual fifty.

2003 – The last time before this Test, English debutants scored a fifty and took a 4-fer in a Test was in 2003 against South Africa at Nottingham.

2014 – Last time before Moeen Ali, an England player picked up a Test hat-trick was Stuart Broad in 2014 against Sri Lanka at Leeds.
