England v West Indies 2017: 1st Test, Day 3 – Statistical Highlights

One might not have thought England would rip through West Indies on the 3rd day after the score at end of day 2 read 44/1 in 16 overs. The visiting side’s batsmen failed to show any fight on Saturday as they were bowled out twice in the day losing 19 wickets for just 291 runs. They were bowled out shortly after lunch for just 168 in the first innings and their 2nd innings couldn’t last even a complete session as they were bundled for only 137.

0 – Number of fifty-plus stands for West Indies in this Test match. They are only the 2nd team to be all out twice in a Test match in England without a fifty-plus partnership in the last 15 years. Sri Lanka got out in a similar fashion in the Leeds Test in 2016.

4 – England bowled out the opposition in the follow-on innings in less than 50 overs on four of the last seven occasions. West Indies’ 2nd innings lasted just 45.4 overs.

7 – Number of times West Indies were enforced to follow-on in Test cricket since 2013; the most number of times for any team. Sri Lanka were forced to follow-on six times during this period while the remaining teams collectively followed-on six occasions since the start of 2013.

7 – Alastair Cook won his 7th Man of the Match award in Test cricket. His last one was against Pakistan in 2015 at Abu Dhabi.

8 – Number of West Indian batsmen who got out twice on the 3rd day. Kraig Brathwaite, Jermaine Blackwood and Miguel Cummins are the only three batsmen who weren’t dismissed twice during the day.

19 – Number of wickets that fell on the 3rd day; the joint most in a single day in a Test match in England since 2004. The Lord’s Test match between England and South Africa last month also witnessed 19 wickets on the 4th day.

40 – James Anderson has picked 40 wickets in Test cricket at Edgbaston; the most by any bowler at this venue. Anderson went past Fred Trueman, who picked up 40 Test wickets at this ground.

384 – Stuart Broad is now the 2nd highest wicket-taker in Test cricket for England. He went past Ian Botham’s tally of 383 Test wickets for England.

556 – Number of balls West Indies faced in this Test; the 7th lowest by them in a Test before getting all out twice. This is the lowest they faced since the Leeds Test in 2007 where they were bowled out twice in 475 balls.
