All the stats and numbers that were recorded during the thrilling 5th ODI game at the Old Trafford.
Australia finally came close to winning a game in the ODI series against England and were in fact favourites to win this one having reduced the hosts to 114/8 while defending 205. Jos Buttler played the innings of his career scoring an unbeaten 110 as England completed a 5-0 series win.
Buttler shared an 81-run stand for the 9th wicket with Adil Rashid and safely took his side over the line while batting with the No.11 Jake Ball. Earlier, Australia were bowled out for 205 in just 34.4 overs as most of their batsmen were out via soft dismissals while the attempt was to go hard and post a huge total.
All the stats and numbers that were recorded during the thrilling 5th ODI game at the Old Trafford:
1 – Australia became the first team to be whitewashed in an ODI series of four and more matches even after winning the tosses in all the matches in the series. They lost the 2013 Test series in India by 4-0 after winning the tosses in all games which is the only such instance in Test cricket.
2 – Only the 2nd time England won a 5-match ODI series by a 5-0 margin and the 2nd time that Australia lost by the same margin. England defeated Zimbabwe in 2001 at home while the Aussies were defeated by South Africa in 2016.
5.91 – Australia’s run-rate of 5.91 is the highest for any side who were bowled out inside 45 overs while batting first. In fact, this is only the 2nd team to have a 5+ RR while batting first despite getting bowled out inside 35 overs. (Full 50-over games) Scotland made 130 in 25.4 overs at 5.06 against Australia in the 2015 CWC game.
12 – The 12 wickets taken by Moeen Ali and Adil Rashid apiece in this series are the most for an England spinner in a bilateral ODI series. Graeme Swann in 2010 against Pakistan and James Tredwell against India in 2013 took 11 wickets apiece.
20y 21d – Sam Curran became the 2nd youngest ODI cricketer for England at the age of 20 years and 21 days. The youngest player to make his ODI debut for England is Ben Hollioake who earned his maiden cap at the age of 19 years and 195 days in 1997.
Sam is also the youngest to take a wicket for England in ODI format surpassing Stuart Broad who bagged his maiden wicket on ODI debut in 2006 at the age of 20 years and 67 days.
24 – The England spinners took a total of 24 wickets in this ODI series which is the most by them in an ODI series/tournament. This is also the first time England spinners took more than 20 wickets in an OD series/tournament as the previous most was 19 wickets in the 1987 CWC.
74 – Jos Buttler took 74 balls for his fifty which is easily the slowest among the 23 fifty-plus scores in ODI cricket. His previous slowest fifty was off 59 balls against India in the 2015 Perth ODI.
81 – The 81-run partnership between Buttler and Adil Rashid is the 2nd highest 9th wicket stand for England in ODI cricket. Liam Plunkett and Vikram Solanki added 100 in the 2005 Lahore ODI against Pakistan.
The Buttler-Rashid stand is also the 2nd highest 9th wicket stand in a successful ODI chase behind Angelo Mathews and Lasith Malinga in the 2010 MCG ODI also against the Aussies.
110* – Jos Buttler’s unbeaten 110 is the 2nd highest individual ODI score where the 2nd best score is 20 and lesser. Canada’s John Davison scored 111 against Windies in the 2003 CWC while Marlon Samuels scored 110* against SL in 2015 where the 2nd best individual score in their innings was 19.
117 – Buttler needed 117 balls to complete his century in this game, his slowest among the six ODI tons. His previous slowest was in 83 balls also against Australia earlier this year in Sydney. Interestingly, Buttler never faced 100 and more balls in an ODI inning before this game.
