With the successful conclusion of the fifth and rescheduled Test at Edgbaston, the two teams will now lock horns in a three-match T20I series, of which the first game will be played at the Rose Bowl in Southampton on July 7, 2022. The Indian team missed the services of their skipper, Rohit Sharma, in the Test match, but he will be back in his role for the white-ball series.
The English team will now be led by Jos Buttler as the world-cup-winning captain Eoin Morgan announced his retirement from international cricket a few days ago. It will be a tedious task for Buttler as he will be leading the team against India, whom they have not defeated since 2014. India has emerged victorious in the last three T20I series that they played against England.
India won both the 2017 and 2018 series by 2-1, followed by a 3-2 victory in Ahmedabad last year. As for India, the squad for the upcoming first T20I is different from the second and third. Some of the senior players have been rested as they just finished a five-day Test match, and in place, members of the Ireland squad have been given a chance.
The forthcoming match will be Buttler’s maiden captaincy stint. While India is backed with a couple of T20I series wins in the recent past, England’s recent outing against the West Indies ended in a close contest but they lost the series 3-2. The Indian players in the squad for the first game recently defeated the Irishmen and won the series 2-0 under Hardik Pandya’s captaincy.
Pitch Report
The surface at the Rose Bowl in Southampton has ample to offer for both the batters and the bowlers. Of the nine T20Is played at the venue so far, the team defending has won in five instances. The average first innings total at this venue is 168 runs, and thus it will be a close encounter that will witness some big runs being scored.
Playing Combinations for ENG vs IND
England
The hosts will look to continue their winning momentum from their recent bilateral series against the Netherlands. English batters are in good form, and so are the bowlers. Buttler would look to bag a win in his first-ever match as a full-time captain to start off his captaincy career with a bang, and England will look to defeat the visitors by utilizing the home advantage to the fullest.
Predicted Playing XI: Jos Buttler (C and wk), Jason Roy, Dawid Malan, Liam Livingstone, Moeen Ali, Sam Curran, Chris Jordan, David Willey, Reece Topley, Tymal Mills, Matthew Parkinson.
India
After a disappointing loss in the Test match, India would want a series victory to plot an act of perfect revenge. The Indian lineup is filled with plenty of hard-hitters who can take the side to a 200+ score. Deepak Hooda will be the player to watch out for given his recent form during the practice games as well as the Ireland series.
Predicted Playing XI: Rohit Sharma (C), Ishan Kishan (wk), Sanju Samson, Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya, Deepak Hooda, Dinesh Karthik, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Harshal Patel, Yuzvendra Chahal, Avesh Khan.
