England vs India, 2018: 1st Test, Day 1 – Statistical Highlights

India might be the happier side after the first day’s play at Birmingham that kick-started their 5-match Test series against England. The hosts, who won the toss elected to bat first and made a good start thanks to an 80-run knock from their skipper Joe Root. However, Root’s run out in the final session turned things upside down and England ended the day at 283/9 after being 216/3. Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin recorded his first 4-wicket haul in England with 4/60 at stumps on day one.

All the major stats and numbers recorded during the first day’s play of the 5-match Test series:

4 – Ravichandran Ashwin is only the 4th Indian spinner to claim a 4-wicket haul on the first day of a Test series outside Asia. BS Chandrasekhar in the 1976 New Zealand series, BS Bedi in the 1977/78 Australia series and Anil Kumble in the 2007/08 Australia series began with five-wicket hauls on the opening day.

7 – Ashwin now has taken a 4-wicket haul in seven different countries. He is yet to play a Test match in New Zealand, Zimbabwe and Pakistan/UAE. Among Indian players, Anil Kumble and Zaheer Khan took 4-wicket hauls in all ten countries while Harbhajan Singh and Ishant Sharma also have four-fers in seven different countries.

8 – Alastair Cook now has been dismissed by Ashwin on eight occasions in Test cricket. Only David Warner (9) has got out more often in Test cricket to the off-spinner. Among the spinners, Ashwin and Nathan Lyon are the only players who dismissed Cook on eight occasions in Test cricket.

12 – Joe Root has scored a fifty-plus score in all the 12 Test matches he played against India. No other player has scored a 50+ in more than ten consecutive matches against a single opponent in Test cricket.

5y 231d – Root completed 6000 Test runs in only 5 years and 231 days from his debut making him the quickest to the milestone in terms of duration. He broke the record held by Alastair Cook which was for getting there in 5 years and 342 days from his debut.

27y 214d – Joe Root became the 3rd youngest player to complete 6000 Test runs at the age of 27 years and 214 days. Only Sachin Tendulkar (26y 313d) and Alastair Cook (27y 043d) were younger than Root.

127 – The England skipper completed 6000 Test runs in 127 innings to become the 4th quickest to the milestone among England players after Wally Hammond (114), Len Hutton (116), Ken Barrington (116).

1000 – England became the first Team to appear in 1000 Test matches while India are featuring in their 200th Test match outside Asia.
