Virat Kohli has announced his arrival in Test cricket in England as he played a knock worth 149 in his first outing to help India post 274 in the first innings and concede just a 13-run lead. Kohli kept batting despite the fall of wickets at the other end and ensured he drew down the deficit as low as possible. In this process, he scored his 22nd Test ton and finished with 15 runs more in the innings than he had managed in the entire series on the 2014 England tours. England lost the wicket of Alastair Cook in the last over before stumps on the 2nd day and are 9/1.

1 – Alastair Cook has been dismissed – bowled twice in a Test match for the first time in his 157-match Test career. He fell to Ravichandran Ashwin in both innings of this Test match.
7 – Virat Kohli now has scored a Test century in seven different countries. Among Indian players, only Rahul Dravid (10) and Sachin Tendulkar (9) have scored centuries in more different countries in Test cricket.
9 – Ashwin has dismissed Cook on nine occasions in Test cricket; the joint most times he dismissed any player. The off-spinner claimed David Warner’s wicket on nine instances in this format. Only Morne Morkel (12) had dismissed Cook more than that in Test cricket. The likes of Mitchell Johnson and Trent Boult also got the better of Cook nine times in this format.
15 – Number of Test centuries for Virat Kohli as captain. Only Graeme Smith (25) and Ricky Ponting (19) scored more tons in this format while leading the team.
20y 60d – Sam Curran became the youngest England player to bag a 4-wicket haul in Test cricket at the age of 20 years and 60 days. The previous youngest to take a 4-fer for England in this format was Bill Voce, also a left-arm pacer, at the age of 20 years and 179 days in the Port of Spain Test against Windies in 1930.
124 – Kohli became the quickest to complete 7000 runs in International cricket as captain taking only 124 innings. He bettered the record held by Brian Lara who needed 164 innings, 40 more than Kohli.
149 – Virat Kohli’s 149 is the 10th highest individual score in Test cricket where no other batsman scored 30 and more runs. Among Indians, only VVS Laxman (167 in 2000 Sydney Test) scored runs more in a Test innings when no other batsman could make more than 30 runs.
1967 – The last instance when an Indian spinner before Ravichandran Ashwin opened the bowling in a Test match in England was at the very venue was Bishen Singh Bedi in 1967 Ashwin is only the 2nd visiting spinner in England in the last 25 years to open the bowling. Sri Lanka’s Rangana Herath started the proceedings in the Chester-le-Street Test match in 2016.
