India failed to replicate England’s heroics with the ball after reducing the hosts to 89/4 in the first session only to concede a 250-run lead by the end of the 3rd day at Lord’s. Jonny Bairstow paired up with Chris Woakes as the duo scored runs at quick pace. The visitors failed to sustain the early pressure created and clearly missed the extra seamer in their attack. Woakes scored his maiden century while Bairstow was dismissed for 93. England ended the day on 357/6 as Sam Curran too chipped in with some quick runs.
All the major stats and numbers that were recorded during England’s dominance on the 3rd day:
1 – Chris Woakes’ maiden fifty, maiden century, maiden five-fer and maiden 10-wicket haul in Test cricket all have come at the Lord’s. He scored 66 at this venue in his first appearance in 2016 against Sri Lanka. In the same year, the all-rounder scalped 11 wickets in the Test against Pakistan with figures of 6/70 and 5/32.
5 – Woakes became only the 5th player to score a century and take ten-wicket match haul in Test cricket at the Home of Cricket. England players Sir Gubby Allen, Sir Ian Botham, Stuart Broad and Australia’ Keith Miller were the previous entries in this list. A total of nine players have had a five-wicket haul and a century at this venue.
32 – Ishant Sharma’s 32 wickets in Test cricket in England are the 4th most for any bowler in this country. Only Kapil Dev (43), Anil Kumble (36) and BS Bedi (35) have taken more wickets in England than him.
93 – Jonny Bairstow’s 93 is the 4th highest individual score for England wicketkeeper in the whites against India. Jack Russell scored 124 in 1996, Godfrey Evan scored 104 in 1952 while Matt Prior scored an unbeaten 103 in 2011. Interestingly, all of these scores have come at Lord’s.
120* – Chris Woakes’ unbeaten 120 is the first Test century by a batsman batting at No.7 and lower at the Lord’s since Matt Prior’s 103* also against India.
Woakes’ ton is also the first ton by at No.7 batsman in Test cricket against India since centuries from New Zealand’s BJ Watling and Jimmy Neesham in the Wellington Test match in 2014.
189 – The 189-run partnership between Bairstow and Woakes is England’s highest 6th wicket partnership for the 6th wicket against India in the longest format of the game. Their previous highest was 171 between Ian Botham and Rob Taylor in the Mumbai Test in 1980.
1999 – Ollie Pope became the first England player to bat at No.4 on his Test debut since Michael Vaughan did in 1999 against South Africa in Johannesburg.
