England looked to be in a strong position when they went into lunch on the second day morning before India outplayed the hosts with both bat and ball to put themselves in a winning position. After a delayed start, India were bowled out for just 329 in their first innings scoring only six runs for the last four wickets.
England went into Lunch at 46/0 before the Indian pacers made a comeback. Hardik Pandya’s five-wicket haul demolished the English batting as they were bowled out for only 161. India extended their lead to 292 runs as the positive batting by their top three in the final session helped them to finish the day on 124/2.
All the major stats and numbers recorded a rare day dominated by India in the series:
1 – Hardik Pandya became the first Indian pacer to take a five-wicket haul coming in as the third change or later in Test cricket. As many as 33 five-wicket hauls were taken by Indians coming in as the third change or later in this format with all of them by spinners. The last of the 33 was by Virender Sehwag in the Delhi Test against Australia in 2008.
3 – Rishabh Pant became only the third player to catch the first three wickets of the opposition in his Test debut. India’s Bharath Reddy and Australia’s Tim Paine were the other two players to achieve this rare feat.
5 – Rishabh Pant became the first Indian wicketkeeper to claim five catches in an innings on Test debut. He is overall the sixth keeper and the seventh player to take five and more catches in an innings on Test debut.
20y 318d – Age at which Rishabh Pant came into this Test match. He is the youngest player to claim five catches in a Test inning and also in any innings in international cricket.
England’s Chris Read, also on his Test debut, went into the 1999 Birmingham Test against New Zealand at the age of 20 years and 350 days where he took five catches in the 2nd innings.
29 – Hardik Pandya needed 29 balls to bag a five-wicket haul in England’s first innings. These are the second fewest deliveries and Indian bowler needed to complete a Test fifer. Harbhajan Singh took a fifer in 27 balls in the Kingston Test against West Indies in 2006.
38.2 – Number of overs England batted in the first innings before getting bowled out. This is their 2nd shortest Test innings and the shortest at home in this format against India.
England were 102/10 in 26.2 overs in the fourth innings of the 1981 Mumbai Test while the Indians bundled them out for 101 in 45.2 overs in the 1971 Test match at The Oval.
1938 – The last instance of England losing all 10 wickets in a session in England before today was way back in 1938 in the second innings of the Leeds Test match against Australia. In these 80 years, England lost all ten wickets in a session on only two instances; in the second innings of the 2016 Dhaka Test against Bangladesh and in the 1st innings of the Auckland Test earlier this year against New Zealand.
2012 – India had fifty-plus opening stands in both innings of a Test match for the first time since the Ahmedabad Test in 2012. Their last such instance outside Asia was in the St Kitts Test match against the Windies in 2006. The last time India had two 50+ opening stands in a Test match in England were in the 1986 Birmingham Test match.
