England vs India, 2018: 5th Test, Day 3 – Statistical Highlights

India’s lower order came to the rescue for the first time in this series as the debutant Hanuma Vihari scored fighting 56 while Ravindra Jadeja top-scored for the team with an unbeaten 86. The all-rounder shared a 77-run stand for the 7th wicket with Vihari and added crucial runs for the last three wickets as India finished on 292. With a 40-run first innings lead, England batted out the second half of the day scoring 114 runs in 43 overs for the loss of two wickets.

2 – Ravindra Jadeja became only the 2nd Indian spinner to achieve the double of fifty and a 4-wicket haul in a Test match in England. Vinoo Mankad achieved this double during the Lord’s Test in 1952. Five other Indian pacers have achieved this double in England including Hardik Pandya during the 3rd Test match of this tour.

4 – Alastair Cook is only the 4th player to aggregate 100+ runs on debut and final Test match that too against the same opposition. The likes of Reggie Duff, Bill Ponsford and Bruce Mitchell were the first three players having aggregated over 100 runs on their debut and in the final Test they played against England.

6 – As many as six England bowlers claimed a wicket during India’s first innings. This is only the 3rd instance in the last 20 years for England where six bowling took at least a wicket in a Test innings at home. Six bowlers shared the wickets during the 2007 Test also against India at The Oval and the Lord’s Test against New Zealand in 2015.

35 – India have conceded 35 byes in this Test match thus far. These are the 2nd most they have conceded in a Test match behind the 47 byes in the 2007 Bangalore Test against Pakistan. India conceded 30 byes during the previous Test in Southampton.

56 – Hanuma Vihari became the 10th Indian with a fifty-plus score on Test debut in England. He is also the 6th Indian with a fifty-plus on Test debut while batting at No.6.

101 – Number of byes India have conceded in this Test series so far. This is the first time they have conceded over 100 byes in a Test series. The previous most number of byes India conceded was 84 during the 1970/71 Test series in West Indies.

163 – Runs Keaton Jennings aggregated across the nine innings in this Test series. These are the 6th fewest runs made by any player in a Test series while opening the innings. (Min: 9 innings) Jennings’ tally is the 2nd lowest among England openers in a Test series behind Adam Lyth’s 115 runs during the 2015 Ashes at home across nine innings.
