England’s mission redemption against India didn’t get off to a fruitful start as Virat Kohli’s men dominated Day 1 of the first Test. The green track at the Trent Bridge favoured India’s four-man pace attack as English batters couldn’t do much. Interestingly, the toss-winning captain was Joe Root and he elected to bat first in Nottingham. However, the decision has proved to be costly so far.
India were on command right from the outset with Jasprit Bumrah dismissing opener Rory Burns in the first over. Youngsters Dominic Sibley and Zak Crawley showed some resistance but they couldn’t do much either. England did breathe a sigh of relief when skipper Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow joined forces. The duo added 62 runs for the fourth wicket and the home team seemed back in the hunt.
However, Bairstow fell prey to Mohammed Shami for 29 and it was one-way traffic after that. England lost wickets in a cluster as Indian pacers were breathing fire with the red cherry. As a result, the home team got bundled out for mere 183 runs. While skipper Joe Root (64) scored the most for England, Jasprit Bumrah was the pick of the Indian bowlers – scalping four wickets. In reply, India made a safe start with openers Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul taking India’s score to 21/0 at stumps.
