England vs India 2021, 3rd Test, Day 1 Stats Review: India create a flurry on unwanted records with dismal batting show
India recorded their third-lowest first-innings total in Test matches.
Contrary to the expectations, England comprehensively dominated India on Day 1 of the third Test at the Headingly in Leeds. After bundling the visitors out for 78 runs in the first innings, the Three Lions didn’t put a foot wrong in the batting department and finished the day at 120/0. This means the hosts have already gained a 42-run lead in the first innings and it will be interesting to see whether India make a comeback or not.
Notably, Joe Root’s men were under the pump heading into this game with India having a 1-0 lead in the five-match series. While the opening clash at the Trent Bridge ended in a draw, the second Test saw the visitors registering a thrilling 151-run triumph at the iconic Lord’s. However, England made a stunning comeback in Leeds and might have sealed the game on the first day itself.
Speaking of the proceedings on the game, the toss finally landed in India’s favour and Virat Kohli elected to bat. However, the decision proved to be terrible as England pacers spitted venom with the red cherry. As a result, nine of India’s 11 batters couldn’t even touch the five-run mark. Rohit Sharma (19) and Ajinkya Rahane (18) were the only ones to get into double figures.
As a result, the visitors were folded for 78 runs. For England, veteran James Anderson was the wrecker-in-chief with three wickets. Craig Overton also dismissed three batters while Sam Curran and Ollie Robinson got two scalps apiece. While the track seemed a nightmare for batters in the first innings, England openers Rory Burns (52) and Haseeb Hameed (60) didn’t face much trouble.
Both batters scored half-centuries to dent India further. While England would be determined to tighten their grip even further on Day 2, Virat Kohli’s men need to put up an exceptional effort to come back in the hunt.
