Reece Topley emulated Jasprit Bumrah’s performance from the first match as he achieved his career-best figures of 6/24 to help England level the series 1-1 by defeating India by 100 runs in the second ODI at Lord’s. Topley’s spell overshadowed spinner Yuzvendra Chahal’s figures of 4/47, the best by an India at the venue. On the third anniversary of their maiden World Cup triumph, Jos Buttler and his men bounced back in an emphatic fashion to take the series into the third and the final game at Old Trafford, Manchester.
Speaking about how the clash unfolded, skipper Rohit Sharma won the toss and elected to field first. Openers Jason Roy and Jonny Bairstow amassed 23 and 38 runs respectively with the latter becoming the first victim of Chahal. Joe Root made 11 while Ben Stokes mustered 21 runs with both the batters getting out LBW to the India legspinner. Captain Buttler failed yet again as he got dismissed for the fifth time by Mohammed Shami in ODIs for just four runs.
Liam Livingstone sparked the England innings with his run-a-ball 33 which included two fours and as many maximums before falling prey to Hardik Pandya. Moeen Ali and David Willey then controlled the innings as they scored 47 and 41 runs respectively. The latter got lucky with Prasidh Krishna dropping his catch on the boundary when he was just on one run. The English side reached a total of 246 courtesy of Ali and Willey’s efforts.
Chasing 247, India lost Rohit early on for a duck while his opening partner Shikhar Dhawan managed to score only nine. India’s opening runs off the bat came in the fifth over with Topley and David Willey keeping things tight and quiet for the visitors at the start. Virat Kohli’s nightmare form continued as he fell for 16 with Rishabh Pant getting out without troubling the scorers.
Hardik and Ravindra Jadeja made identical scores of 29 off 44 each but couldn’t get going as the tourist got bundled out for just 146, their second lowest total against England in ODIs. For his match-winning spell which also included two maidens, Reece Topley won the Player of the Match award.
