England vs India 5th Test, Day 1 Stats Review: Rishabh Pant shatters a flurry of records to put India on command

Rishabh Pant’s magical and devastating knock of 146 off just 111 which included 20 fours and four maximums gave England a taste of their own medicine as he dismantled their bowling attack with his aggressive approach. Coming in to bat with India struggling at 64/3, Pant attacked right from the word go and shared a mammoth 222-run stand for the sixth wicket with Ravindra Jadeja. The duo helped India in posting a commanding total of 338/7 in 73 overs on Day 1.

Speaking of how the first day of the rearranged Test went by, Ben Stokes won the toss and opted to field first. Both openers Shubman Gill and Cheteshwar Pujara fell prey to James Anderson, with the latter becoming the victim of the pacer for the 12th time in Tests. Hanuma Vihari and Virat Kohli amassed 20 and 11 runs respectively as both got dismissed by young pacer Matthew Potts. Batting at number six, Shreyas Iyer managed to score only 15 with India tottering at 98/5.

Pant’s destructive hitting continued while Jadeja also brought up his half-century. Both registered the highest sixth-wicket partnership for India against England as the visitors recovered in a spectacular fashion. Part-time bowler Joe Root dismissed the dangerous Pant for 146 while skipper Stokes got rid of Shardul Thakur for just one. Jadeja remained cautious and unbeaten on 83 off 163 as India took the honors on Day one of the historic Test.

12 – James Anderson dismissed Cheteshwar Pujara for the 12th time in Tests, the most he has dismissed any player. The pacer got the better of Australia’s Peter Siddle 11 times in Test cricket.

89 – Rishabh Pant registered the fastest Test century (89 balls) by an Indian wicketkeeper. He surpassed MS Dhoni, who recorded a 93-ball ton against Pakistan in 2006.

222 – Pant and Ravindra Jadeja recorded the highest sixth-wicket partnership of 222 for India against England in Tests. The previous best was 204 by Pant and KL Rahul in the year 2018.

2066 – Pant reached the landmark of 2000 runs in Test cricket.

3 – Pant slammed the third-fastest century (89 balls) for India outside Asia. Virender Sehwag smashed it in 78 deliveries against West Indies in 2006 and Mohammad Azharuddin in 88 balls against England in 1990.

8 – Pujara opened the innings just for the eighth time in 163 innings in the longest format of the game.

2 – Pant also scripted the second-highest score of 146 by a wicketkeeper batter at Edgbaston in Birmingham. Adam Gilchrist tops the chart for scoring 152 in the year 2001.

1 – Pant and Jadeja also recorded the highest sixth-wicket stand of 222 at the venue. The previous best was 190 by Collie Smith and Frank Worrell against England in 1957.

338/7 –  India registered their highest score (338/7) on Day 1 of a Test in England. The previous highest was 324/4 at The Oval in the year 1990.

19.42 – Shubman Gill has now scored 136 runs in eight innings at an average of just 19.42 with one half-century against England.

222 – Pant and Jadeja scripted the joint highest sixth-wicket partnership for India in away Tests. Sachin Tendulkar and Mohammad Azharuddin also scored 222 against South Africa in 1997.

8 – Jasprit Bumrah became the eighth player to captain India in the last one year in international cricket.

5 – Pant has now scored five centuries and all five of them have come in the last match of a Test series.

525 – Pant has now mustered 525 runs in seven innings at an average of 87.50 with one century and four half-centuries at no. five in Tests.

2 – Pant also smashed the second-fastest Test ton (89 balls) for India on England soil. Azharuddin hammered it in 87 deliveries in the year 1990.
