With the Test series between India and England expected to begin in a few weeks time, one of the biggest issues Joe Root and the England team management are facing is the selection of all-rounder Ben Stokes. The latter, who had missed out on the Ashes series and the subsequent tour of New Zealand will now be making a return to the Test side after having made a comeback to the limited-overs’ side against the Indians.
This time, Stokes will be coming on board as the vice-captain, a role he was given prior to the criminal proceedings in court. However, as far as Joe Root is concerned, one thing is clear – that the Brits will be in a position to pick their strongest squad for the series. He also went on to add that if Stokes is fit to play, he will certainly be up for selection.
“We are going to pick our best team and make sure we go into that series with the strongest squad,” Root said. “If Ben’s fit to play, he’ll be up for selection. He loves playing cricket, he loves being out there – you can see when he’s on a cricket field he’s fully engaged with what’s going on.
‘Stokes wants to be involved all the time’
While speaking about the selection of Stokes, Root went on to add that Stokes was the kind of player he did indeed want in his side. He also reminded the media about the manner in which he always liked being involved from time to time showing no qualms about his role in the side, to say the least.
“He wants the ball all the time. He wants to be involved in what’s happening and I’m sure that will be exactly the same throughout that game.”
