Virat Kohli looked out of sorts the last time India toured England. However, before the start of the series, the skipper was confident of his team’s abilities and backed his players to improve India’s record in England. James Anderson was one bowler who troubled Kohli in 2014. Usually, Kohli does not have an extended bad patch in his career and he was surely better equipped to face James Anderson this time around.

Anderson, who is 36 now, is still the leader of the English pace attack. Joe Root banked on his experience to rattle India’s batting lineup, especially their captain. The pacer is four years older from the last time he troubled India and Kohli has improved a lot. The first Test witnessed an engrossing duel between them and it is set to continue for the rest of the series.

Cricket at its best

The lead pacer bowled well in the first innings to Virat Kohli as the ball went past the edge of his bat on quite a few occasions. Anderson did find the edge when Kohli was on 21 but poor slip catching from England ensured that he stayed in the middle. He made them pay and scored 149 which significantly shifted the momentum of the game.

“I’ve been encouraged the way I’ve bowled at him (Kohli) in this game so far, found the edge a few times in the first innings. On another day I could have got him for 20, and then we’re not talking about how brilliant he is.” he was quoted as saying by India TV.

“A player like Virat provides very few opportunities to the opposition. Teams need to grab those chances otherwise it is bound to hurt them big time. We could have been in a much different position now. We’ve just got to go away and know we can get him. No one is invincible in world cricket. We can get him out.” he added.

Kohli is still batting on 43 in the second innings and remains the key in India’s chase of 194. England will be hoping to pick his wicket as soon as possible and take a 1-0 lead in the series.
