The ongoing England tour has created several firsts as far as the Indian team is concerned. With Virat Kohli becoming the first captain to secure a T20I series win in England against the latter, the first ODI also saw a tad bit of history created. Of course, Kuldeep Yadav’s si-wicket haul grabbed the spotlight rather significantly, a rather smaller celebration was in favour of 28-year old Siddharth Kaul who was making his ODI debut.
In an ideal situation, the Indian team management would not even be thinking about someone along the likes of Siddharth Kaul given their pace bowling battery that has impressed quite a bit. However, with injuries to Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Jasprit Bumrah alike, Kaul and Yadav were paired up in Trent Bridge. And as far as Kaul was concerned, it was clear that he had indeed come a long way.
The 28-year old impressed quite a bit in the Indian Premier League 2018 and was a crucial part of the Sunrisers Hyderabad side that reached the final of the tournament as well. He had made his T20I debut against the Irish in the initial stages of the UK tour and subsequently played against England as well in T20I series which saw the Indians winning 2-1.
Prior to the start of the match, Kaul was handed his debut cap from the senior-most member of the Indian side – MS Dhoni. He showed tremendous composure on somewhat of a batting paradise and did not pick a wicket. He played alongside Virat Kohli in the 2008 U19 World Cup and was one of the most important players for the Indians in that particular tournament as well.
Siddharth Kaul speaks:
An ecstatic Kaul went on to write on Twitter, “ODI Debut. Cap Presented by Mahi Bhai. A great win for the side. It was all like a Deja Vu. I think it is a safe time to replug this tweet. Thank you for Everything God And thanks to all those who supported me :)”
