England vs India: Virat Kohli equals Ricky Ponting and Clive Lloyd in elite list
Virat played a useful hand of 75 runs in his partnership with Rohit Sharma.
Back in January 2017 Virat Kohli took over the limited-overs leadership from MS Dhoni and has tasted quite a bit of success in international cricket. The Delhi-born cricketer is presently in England where he and his Indian team are playing a three-match ODI series. The first match was played at Trent Bridge in Nottingham and the Men in Blue comprehensively won by eight wickets.
Kuldeep Yadav wielded his magic with the ball after which Rohit Sharma scored his 18th century in ODI cricket. Virat also chipped in with a useful knock of 75 runs from 82 balls, however, he would be disappointed for the fact that he couldn’t pile on his 36th century in the 50-over format. The Brits put on 268 on the board, which was comfortably tracked down by India with 59 balls to spare.
Another milestone for Virat
Over the course of his career, Virat has garnered numerous records and yesterday wasn’t any different for him. The 29-year old played his 50th ODI as captain and won 39 of them, equalling the legendary Clive Lloyd and Ricky Ponting, who is the owner of those many victories after leading their teams in 50 matches. However, Ponting has nine defeats compared to Kohli’s 10 and Llyod’s 11.
Both Lloyd and Ponting have a couple of 50-overs World Cup titles to their names and Kohli will have the chance in the upcoming year in England and Wales to win at least one event. The right-handed batsman holds a win-percentage of 78 in ODIs after 25 matches, the most for any cricketer after those many matches.
In yesterday’s match, Kohli came to bat after Shikhar Dhawan took India off to a blistering start. He and Rohit carried on the good work and compiled a partnership of 167 runs to take the sting out of the English attack. He was eventually nipped out by Adil Rashid in the 33rd over of India’s run-chase.
