England suffered a narrow series defeat to India in the recently concluded ODI series as Jos Buttler’s turbulent start to full-time captaincy continued after losing the T20I series against the same opposition earlier.
But the English side won’t have much time to lick their wounds as a combative South African team visits the English shores for an ODI and T20I series followed by three Tests. The Proteas will engage in the first ODI of the three-match series on 19th July, Tuesday at the Riverside Ground.
South Africa, unlike the hosts, haven’t played any cricket since their T20I series against India last month, which finished 2-2, and will be itching to get back onto the field amidst a jampacked international calendar. They will be without their influential skipper Temba Bavuma, recovering from an elbow injury sustained against India. Keshav Maharaj will lead the side on his behalf instead.
Pitch and conditions
The surface at the Riverside Stadium is one of the lower scoring grounds in the country, and the team chasing has won 11 of the 20 matches played at the venue. The pacers will be a handful at the venue with early seam movement on offer and the team winning the toss would prefer to bowl first, and a first innings tally of under 240 will favour the chasing side.

Buttler will be concerned with the recurrent failure of his top-order batters in the ODI series against India but will back them to come good in the upcoming white-ball series against the Proteas. Matthew Potts, who has been impressive in red-ball cricket for the hosts, has made it to the ODI squad and will be eager to make his impression in white-ball cricket as well. Adil Rashid also returns to the squad after his return from Pilgrimage duties.
