After suffering a 2-1 (3) loss to India, England are now set to host South Africa in a quick turnaround in a three-match ODI series beginning from July 19, 2022, at Chester-le-Street in Durham. Notably, the Proteas are touring England for a full-fledged series with three one-day internationals and as many T20Is and Tests. The second and the third 50-overs matches will be played on the 22nd and 24th at Old Trafford in Manchester and Headingley in Leeds respectively. Ben Stokes, England’s World Cup-winning champion in 2019, has surprised the cricketing world by announcing his retirement from the ODIs and the opening game in Durham will be his last appearance in the format.
Speaking about the India series, Jos Buttler led the ODI team for the first time after he was appointed as a full-time white-ball skipper. Having faced heavy defeat by a 10-wicket margin in the opening encounters, the hosts England bounced back with a thumping 100-run victory over the Indians in the following game at Lord’s. With the series level at 1-1, Rishabh Pant and Hardik Pandya proved too much for the English side as they both won the series for the Men in Blue with their heroic performances. Pant smashed his maiden century while Pandya starred with both bat and ball with his knock of 71 and a four-wicket haul.
Talking about the visitors, South Africa, they whitewashed India 3-0 (3) in an emphatic fashion earlier this year on home soil but suffered a shocking series loss by a 2-1 margin to Bangladesh at home. Their regular white-ball captain Temba Bavuma is ruled out of the entire England tour due to injury as Keshav Maharaj will don the captaincy hat. Both the sides last met in a bilateral ODI series in England in the year 2017, and it was the hosts who grabbed the series 2-1 (3).
