England vs West Indies, 2020: 3rd Test, Day 3 – Rare home success for England openers, All-round doubles for Holder, Broad's feats and more stats

England stands eight wickets away from sealing the series at the end of the third day’s play after setting a target close to 400 against the West Indies. The Caribbean team was bowled out for 197 in their first innings as Stuart Broad picked up a 6-wicket haul. Later, England’s top three Rory Burns (90), Dominic Sibley (56) and Joe Root (68*) helped their side to post 226/2 in 58 overs. Broad left West Indies reeling at 10/2 by picking up both wickets on 3rd day evening which took the English pacer’s Test match tally to 499 wickets.

Broad tops England’s lists:

8 – Number of 6-wicket hauls for Stuart Broad in Test cricket at home; the most 6-fers for any player on England soil. Broad went past Alec Bedser, Sir Ian Botham and Derek Underwood who all had as many as seven 6-fers in Test matches in England.

12 – The 6-fer in the first innings was Stuart Broad’s 12th haul of six or more wickets in Test cricket; the joint-most 6-wicket hauls by any player for England in the longer format. Sydney Barnes also had as many as 12 6-fers in Test cricket for the England team.

Rare success at home for England openers:

114 – The partnership of 114 by Rory Burns is now the first century opening stand for England at home since the 126-run stand between Alex Hales and Sir Alastair Cook in their 2nd innings of the 2016 Birmingham Test against Pakistan. England had four opening partnerships of 100+ runs away from home in these four years.

2016 – The last instance of both England openers scoring 50+ runs in the same innings was during their 2nd innings of the 2016 Rajkot Test against India. The 2nd innings of the 2016 Birmingham Test against Pakistan was the last time when England’s top three scored in excess of 50 runs.

All-round doubles for Holder:

3 – Jason Holder now has scored exactly 2000 runs in Test cricket which makes him only the 3rd West Indian to complete the double of 2000+ runs and 100+ wickets in this format. Sir Gary Sobers and Carl Hooper are the other two West Indian players to complete this all-round double.

100 – Jason Holder is now the first West Indies captain and overall the 9th captain in Test cricket to bag 100 wickets while being in the service. He is also only the 4th player to bag 100 wickets as captain in both Tests and ODIs. Imran Khan, Wasim Akram and Shaun Pollock are the other three players with this achievement.

1620 – Holder scored 1620 runs as the captain of West Indies in Test cricket until their first innings. Only three captains have scored more runs than Holder in this format alongside picking up 100 wickets – Sir Gary Sobers (3528), Imran Khan (2408) and Daniel Vettori (1917).

All or nothing series for Sibley:

2 – Dominic Sibley is only the 2nd England player to either score 50+ runs or ducks in all innings played during a Test series of 5+ innings. Sibley bagged a duck in first innings and scored a fifty in the second innings during the 1st and 3rd Tests and smashed a century in the only innings he batted in the 2nd Test. Michael Atherton had a century, three fifties and a duck during the 1990 home Test series against New Zealand.

33.38 – Sibley had a batting strike rate of 33.38 during this series which is lowest by any player since Shivnarine Chanderpaul’s 32 SR during the 2011 home Test series against India. (Min: 200 runs) Chanderpaul scored 241 runs in six innings during the series in 2011 from 753 balls. Sibley’s SR is also the lowest by any England player during a Test series in the last 22 years.
