Gone are those days when bowlers were just expected to do their task with the ball. In the yesteryears, bowlers’ skill with the bat was not given much priority. The likes of Courtney Walsh, Glenn McGrath, Javagal Srinath and other legendary bowlers had terrible records in batting. However, the scenario has completely changed now. In this generation, almost every team expects its bowlers to have decent skills with the bat. Perhaps this is the reason behind England being the best ODI team in the world for quite some time now.

Since the end of the 2015 World Cup, England’s tail has performed better with the bat than any other team’s tail. In fact, they are leading the other nations by quite a big margin. Among the ten World Cup playing nations, only England’s batsman, who has batted between number eight and below, have scored more than 6 runs per over. During this period, England’s number eight, nine, ten and eleven have averaged more than 22 during this time period.

Afghanistan are second in the list with their tail-enders scoring a promising 5.57 runs per over at an average of 21.63. New Zealand, Pakistan and South Africa complete the top five. New Zealand average 20.25 while Pakistan and South Africa average 19.85 and 16.59 respectively during this period.

As far as India are concerned, they are placed a lowly ninth, sitting only above Sri Lanka who are struggling in ODIs for quite some time now. India is currently placed second in the ODI rankings but the poor batting skills of their lower-order is well documented. Since the 2015 World Cup, India’s number eight and the following players have scored at a run-rate of 4.73 per over. They have scored runs at an average of only 13.74. With the next World Cup not very far away, the team management will be hoping that the lower-order does well.

England’s lower order impresses again

England’s tail-enders impressed once again on Sunday as they beat Pakistan by 54 runs to seal the five-match series 4-0. Number ten Tom Curran slammed 29 from just 15 balls as England bounced back after getting pegged back of 295 for 7 to post 351 for 9. There were also notable contributions from number eight Chris Woakes (13) and David Willey (14).
