English batsman Steven Davies received a gift worth seven runs in one ball during the encounter between Somerset and Kent last night in the Natwest T20 Blast tournament. Davies, who plays for Somerset was handed four bonus runs after a wild throw from Kent wicketkeeper Sam Billings went to the boundary. Prior to the overthrow, the batsmen had already completed three runs.

Davies hit an impeccable square drive as the ball raced toward the ropes only to be saved by a Kent Spitfires fielder. What started off as a brilliant piece of fielding, ended up in mayhem with the unscrupulous overthrow. Davies, who was batting on 14 and immediately moved to 21, before finishing his innings with 62 off 32 balls that helped Somerset post a mammoth total of 197/6 on the scoreboard. However, the blunder didn’t prove too costly for Kent as the side went on the win the rain-shortened game by seven wickets.

With the victory, Kent earned their first win in four matches. Skipper Sam Northeast’s unbeaten 54 guided his side to a revised target of 181 off 18 overs after Somerset made 197-6. A season-best T20 Blast opening partnership of 77/0 between Kent openers Joe Denly and Daniel Bell-Drummond set up the course for an impressive victory at Canterbury. They looked equally impressive with the willow, despite a brief wobble following the rain delay which saw the Duckworth-Lewis Stern system set a new target of 181.

McCullum shines in Middlesex victory

However, both the batsmen fell soon after play resumed, leaving the side vulnerable. However captain Northeast stepped up to the cause to help Kent climb up to the fifth spot in a tight group with four points separating all nine teams.

In the other game of the night, Middlesex took on Essex to register a 72-run win over the Eagles. Guided by former Black Caps’ skipper Brendon McCullum’s smashing 63 from 28 balls, the win helped Middlesex move off the bottom of the South Group. The Eagles have now dropped to the last spot in the group.
