A rare fatality occurred in the early hours of the Sunday morning in England. Jerry Taylor, a 54-year-old cricketer found himself dead in a motorcycle accident on the A6112 north of Coldstream in the Scottish borders. Taylor was known widely in the local circuit and was well-liked in the West Tyne Cricket League for years now. After playing for decades in the league, he recently captained the Allendale’s second team in the league.
Prior to becoming the skipper, Taylor played two years for Allendale where he was revered. Allendale was the fourth side that Taylor played in his illustrious career. The first three being Newbrough, Prudhoe and Hexham Leazes. At Leazes, Taylor skippered the second string team with the bowler topping the list of wicket-takers for the club.
During his stay at Leazes, the quick had picked 258 wickets. This week, the members of the local cricket community met to pay tribute to Mr Taylor. West Tyne League’s results secretary and an umpire, Dickie Purvis commended his efforts in the league. “He was an absolute gentleman and a lovely fellow. He was just such a nice bloke and this news is just so sad,” said Purvis according to Hexham Courant.
Club releases the statement
Further, he added, “He was a decent bowler, in fact, he was a nagging length bowler, and I remember when I played against him when he played for Prudhoe and he got 50 and hit me all over the field.” However, his efforts were well recognised during his stint at Leazes. The club, following their former cricketer’s death released a statement which read, “No one has taken more than his 258 wickets for the second team to which he was dedicated and served as both captain and vice-captain.”
A club spokesman said, “Jerry’s enthusiasm and hard work in getting a game together each week was an example to us all.” The Police are still appealing for witnesses following the collision near Lennel at 11.25 am.
