Eoin Morgan is ready to drop himself during the World Cup for the team's benefit
The ODI series between England and Sri Lanka will commence on Wednesday.
England’s limited-overs side has come a long way since the 2015 World Cup debacle. The selectors decided to revamp the whole side post the event and three years down the line, they are one of the major contenders to win the title at home in 2019. Eoin Morgan has led the side extremely well in this period and has gone through a lot of ups and downs. Meanwhile, the cricketer has also cleared that he won’t hesitate from the team during the World Cup if it is benefitting the team.
The Brits are all set to play the five-match ODI series against Sri Lanka in the island nation and this tour is touted as one of the toughest for the group having struggled in the sub-continent in the past. It will be interesting to see how they cope up with the spin challenge offered by the home side and it will also help England to gauge themselves ahead of the mega event.
I am an honest guy
Eoin Morgan, while speaking to the Sky Sports ahead of the series opener, highlighted the way the team has grown over the years in the 50-overs format after what transpired three years ago. The left-hander is going through one of the many rough patches with the bat in hand and claimed that he will drop himself if required if he is not able to contribute to the team.
“It is a brave call but we have come a long way with this team and we need to put ourselves in the best position in order to be contenders. If that means I am not good enough to be in the team as a captain or as a player I will be the first one to say it, I’m an honest guy. I’m more than capable of making a tough decision,” Morgan said.
Morgan has done the same previously making a statement that everyone in the team has to perform consistently to stake their claim. England are on a winning spree and have won eight consecutive bilateral series in ODIs. They will be now looking to improve their record in Sri Lanka and the fact that the hosts are not really in great shape gives them an excellent chance to beat them.
