Watch: Eoin Morgan's innovative shot in BBL
Watch: Eoin Morgan’s innovative shot in BBL: If there is someone on a high in England cricket at the moment it has to be Eoin Morgan. The 28 years’ old left hand batsman was this week enacted as the new captain of the England ODI team. Morgan replaced under fire Alistair Cook and will lead the team against Australia and India in the tri-series and then also in the Cricket World Cup 2015 in Australia and New Zealand starting February next year.
Playing in the Big Bash League (BBL) in Australia Morgan representing the Sydney Thunders against the Brisbane Heat. The game played at the ANZ Stadium in Sydney was a high action game as old warriors Australia’s Michael Hussy and South African all-rounder Jacques Kallis (both retired) gave the team a blazing start as the two put together a 160 runs partnership.
Hussey missed out on what could have been a Thundering hundred and was dismissed 4 runs before the three figure mark.
The now England skipper Eoin Morgan thus arrived at the centre to join Kallis, as the later was already hitting it quite well, Morgan did not get many deliveries to face and by the end of the innings had only faced 5 deliveries for the 12* runs he made.
The best feature of that short stay was the shot that Morgan invented, we have seen cuts, and the late cuts, this was even more late; can be called a late late cut. Morgan waited for the ball, shifting deeper into the crease and took enough room to expose all threes’ the bowler saw the improvisation and bowled more towards him. But, Morgan was quick at it and innovated this shot, cutting the ball fine enough to run down behind the wickets. The wicket-keeper had no chance for it and the ball went all the way to a boundary. This is probably the first time that a shot like this was invented or hit on the cricketing field.
We are yet to give it an official name, until then lets call this Eoin Morgan’s late late cut.
