Even after India beat Pakistan, Twitter is abuzz with #SackRaviShastri
They sought removal of Shastri for any reason under the sun, making the entire episode a hilarious one.
For Ravi Shastri, even a big win over Pakistan isn’t enough to change his dented popular image. On Thursday, on the eve of India’s first match in the Super Four stage against Bangladesh in Dubai, the team’s head coach found himself trending on Twitter. No, it was no celebration of his role in India’s big victory over arch-rivals Pakistan on Wednesday but a revival of the old call of his ouster! Shastri came under heavy criticism recently after India were thumped 1-4 in a five-Test series in England.
The 56-year-old former all-rounder was not only accused of talking big while India struggled to deliver in the tricky English conditions but also because of his countering the criticism by targeting past Indian teams’ over their performance abroad.
The coach also found himself at the receiving end over rumours that he is seeing Bollywood actress Nimrat Kaur, 20 years his junior, and a number of reports were published over his past affairs and that how he saw marriage. On Thursday, it was fairly clear that bad times have not yet left Shastri.
Shastri’s topsy-turvy run
He came back to become the head coach in July last year after former leg-spinner Anil Kumble had an unceremonious exit as the coach and even though Shastri’s tenure began well with series wins over teams like Sri Lanka, he soon found the brutal side of the game abroad. India lost 1-2 in a Test series in South Africa and then the ODI and Test series in England. The clamour went big over sacking Shastri and bring somebody like Rahul Dravid who has flourished as the coach of junior Indian sides.
The fans were no less shocked to see #SackRaviShastri trending on Twitter on Thursday. They were more than amused, even thanked the one who started it and soon tweets and memes kept piling on targeting the Indian coach. They sought removal of Shastri for any reason under the sun, making the entire episode a hilarious one.
