'Every time I went back to sleep, I was in tears' - Vijay Shankar opens about having a harsh time after Nidahas Trophy final
Shankar was also the part of Team India squad that went onto play in 2019 World Cup.
Vijay Shankar, the Indian all-rounder remained in headlines till the culmination of ICC World Cup 2019. He made his debut during in Nidahas Trophy and the first game for him didn’t go down well for him. However, he went onto play the finals of that tournament that turned out to be a forgettable game for him. But, Dinesh Karthik‘s brilliance saved from facing humiliation. Now, Shankar has opened up over the same talking about the tough time that he had after that tour.
The 26-year-old made his debut back in 2018 and has so far played 12 ODIs and 9 T20Is in which his performance never looked up to the mark. One game that Shankar will never forget all over his life will be the final of Nidhas Trophy where he miserably failed to score runs with the bat. The right-handed batsman came out to bat when Team India’s score was 133 at the loss of five wickets.
Vijay Shankar says it was a very difficult time for him
At that time Rohit Sharma, who was the skipper in that tournament, asked him to go ahead of Dinesh Karthik. However, he failed to live up to the expectations of his captain as he scored 17 runs off 19 balls due to which India had almost lost that game. But, thanks to Karthik, who rode India to a win on the back of his blissful knock. After that game, Shankar was criticised for his poor show with the bat in the crucial situation of the game.
Now, Vijay Shankar has opened up over the same and said that it was difficult for him to overcome and it was very difficult for him to go out of his home. And, the people would have asked him about what all happened on the field. He also added the fact that it was a difficult time for him as he used to be in tears all day. However, after Nidhas Trophy 2018, the all-rounder went onto play in IPL that changed everything as he managed to perform well for his team in that season.
“It was pretty hard for me to come out of it. For the first week, I found it really hard to go out of my house. Because, people would come up to me, and they would always ask me about the negative things that had happened. After the first two-three days, I was literally shattered. Every time I went back to sleep, I was in tears. So, all I could do to come out of it was train really hard,” said Shankar said as quoted by Sportstar.
“I didn’t give myself any free time, for that’s when you generally get a lot of negative thoughts. Immediately after that tour, we had the IPL and I had a very good season. Everything changed from there. So, according to me, changing the perception is very, very easy. It just changes overnight,” added the all-rounder.
