India and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) skipper Virat Kohli earlier had announced his decision to relinquish captaincy from the RCB team after the 14th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). He made this news official on Sunday (19 September). Kohli and RCB have been together since the inception of the league in 2008. He is also the only player to have played 200 games for the same team.

Kohli has been captaining the team since 2013 and naturally this decision from him to quit captaincy has not gone down too well with his loyal and passionate followers. With this decision, the fans of Kohli now want at least a trophy from Kohli during the UAE leg of the IPL. RCB have reached finals three times one under Kohli in 2016, but the team is yet to lay their hands at the elusive trophy.

Cricketer-turned expert Virender Sehwag believes Kohli owes at least one cup for his RCB family as a captain due to the immense fan following he has across the world. “IPL is important for every captain but I think more so for Virat as with his huge fan base, everyone wants Virat to win a trophy for the Bangalore franchise. If not multiple times then at least once in his tenure as captain,” said Sehwag as quoted by Times Now.

RCB are currently placed third on the points table and still have six games to be played in the UAE leg this season. Sehwag further opined that this might be the year when RCB finally wins the trophy and give a fitting farewell to its skipper Virat Kohli. “This has been a strange year off the field due to pandemic and who knows it might be a different year for Bangalore from previous seasons and they go on to win the trophy,” said Sehwag.

Virender Sehwag reckons DC and MI favorites to win this year’s IPL

Sehwag also feels that Delhi Capitals (DC) and five-time IPL champions Mumbai Indians (MI) are favorites win this year owing to their consistency and also due to the IPL being played in the UAE.

“Since the second half has been shifted to Dubai and Abu Dhabi, I think Delhi and Mumbai will again be favorites and the five-time champions are slightly ahead,” he added.

RCB didn’t start the UAE leg on a bright note as they lost to KKR by nine wickets. They have few days of a gap before they take on CSK on Friday (24 September).
