Afghanistan cricket team has been climbing the ladder of success over the last few years and no wonder the fans in the country are thrilled with their performances. Even in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL), the likes of Rashid Khan and Mujeeb Ur Rahman have set the stage on fire with their bowling which the people back home are loving. Unfortunately, though the conditions in Afghanistan doesn’t conducive to play cricket as 8 people were killed recently due to the multiple explosion during the cricket match in the eastern Nangarhar province.
This is not the first time that the cricket match or tournament has been jeopardised due to the bomb blast in the country. Last year, during Shpageeza Cricket League (T20 tournament), the bomb explosion took place outside the Kabul International Stadium which led to a lot of overseas cricketers leaving the tournament midway due to the security concerns. Now, this incident has put a stark question mark on the future of cricket in the country.
45 injured in the incident
According to the reports in Times Now, the unfortunate incident happened during a cricket match of the nighttime tournament when hundreds of spectators had gathered. An Afghan official confirmed the news saying that at least 8 people have been killed in multiple explosions. Attahullah Khogyani, spokesman for the provincial governor in Nangarhar, also informed that around 45 people were injured due to the blast and the investigations are underway.
“Around 45 others have been wounded at the sports stadium late last night in the provincial capital of Jalalabad. An investigation is underway,” he said. No one has still claimed the responsibility for the attack but reportedly both Taliban insurgents and the Islamic State group are active in eastern Afghanistan, especially in Nangarhar province.
