Test cricket is said to be the ultimate goal of every cricketer. Umesh Yadav’s exploits in the long home Test season last year has helped him develop as an international cricketer. By his own admission, playing consistently in the Test side helped him transform his game to the next level.
Outstanding returns in the long Test season
India went on to win all four Test series played at home. They beat New Zealand, England, Bangladesh and Australia in a total of 13 Tests, losing just a solitary test and winning 10. Umesh was part of the side for 12 Tests and finished the season as the third highest wicket-taker for India with a haul of 30 wickets, behind Ashwin and Jadeja. He bowled with a great rhythm throughout the season and his ability to inflict damage with the old ball through reverse swing set him apart.
Speaking to India Today, the Vidarbha sensation said that he remained focused on concentrating on his strengths.
“The long Test season has indeed changed my game and helped me. We transform every time and as a fast bowler I’ve learnt a lot and focused on my strengths and looked to stay consistent,” said Umesh.
The 29-year old had a reasonable Test series in the Caribbean which preceded the long home season. India won 2 out of the 3 Tests with the fast bowler capturing five wickets. Not many fast bowlers get to play 14 out of the last 16 Tests played by the team which highlights the significant improvement of Umesh.
‘Fun working with Shatri and Arun’
Speaking about the appointment of the new coach Ravi Shastri followed by Bharat Arun’s appointment, Umesh said that he is comfortable with both individuals and shares great rapport with the duo.
“Worked with them already. Know their ways of working. Don’t think much has changed. Every coach offers you something new and I’ve tried to learn everything I can. Ravi and Bharat sir are jolly people and I think we’ll have fun,” said Umesh.
The Kohli-led India has embarked on a full-tour of Sri Lanka. They play a 3-Test series followed by 5-ODIs and a solitary T20. India won the Test series 2-1 the last time they visited Sri Lanka in 2015. Umesh was confident of India’s chances this time again but didn’t want to make big statements ahead of the tour.
“Dont know about 3-0. We’re trying our best and will look to give our best out there. If we play good cricket… we’re confident of doing the same thing that we did last season,” said Umesh.
