15 Facts about Liam Dawson: The veteran domestic English all-rounder

Liam Dawson is a testimony for all players that if one performs well in domestic cricket, he is bound to get the national call. Dawson has been playing his trade in the game of cricket for a long time now. Having made an early start to his career, he has seen many ups and downs. He has been on the fringes of being in the England line up for a long time. However, the appearances have been sporadic. An all-rounder by his style of play, Liam Dawson is a slow left-arm bowler capable of handy batting in the middle order. He has been drafted in the England Test squad for the tour to India as a replacement for Zafar Ansari. Here are some interesting facts about Liam Dawson: 1. Roots and early start to cricket Liam Dawson was born on 1 March 1990 at Swindon in Wiltshire. He started playing cricket at an age when most kids do not even walk properly. His earliest memories of playing cricket dates back to the time when he was 3 year old. He did his basic schooling from John Bentley School. 2. Joining the first club at 7 When Dawson turned 7, he joined his first cricket club. He joined the Goatacre. Later, he moved to Chippenham Cricket Club in Wiltshire where he played his youth cricket. 3. Spotted by Hampshire During his stint with the Chippenham Club, he was spotted by Hampshire. He soon started playing for Hampshire Second XI and Wiltshire. 4. U19 call Performances for Hampshire second XI earned him a call to the England U19 team for the tour of Malaysia in 2006-7. During the unofficial tour, he even bagged figures of 6/9 against Malaysia U19. At the U19 level, he has played 29 matches and has 37 wickets to his name with a best of 5/39. He was also made the captain of the U19 team. 5. One for the longer format In the 4 Youth Test matches that he featured in during his U19 days, Liam Dawson bagged 19 wickets at an impressive bowling average of 22.73. 6. Fondly known as He is fondly known as Daws and Lemmy by his teammates. 7. First Class debut Liam Dawson made his First Class debut for Hampshire in September 2007 against Yorkshire. He had a mild debut. His maiden century came in the following year against Nottinghamshire. 8. One of the England Lions Dawson was drafted in the England Lions team that toured New Zealand in January 2009. The year was a successful one for him as his team Hampshire won the Friends Provident Trophy. 9. Shift to batting and back It was during the 2011 season, when he started to focus on his batting. He started opening for Hampshire in County Championship and did a decent job. However, he was quick to realise that bowling was his forte. He picked up 26 wickets in the County Championships in 2012 season. 10. Scoring in excess of 1000 runs Liam Dawson got better with time. In the 2013 season, he scored heavily and crossed the 1000-run mark in the season for the first time. He soon started to change gears in order to adapt to the shorter formats. 11. Out of favor for Hampshire His love story with Hampshire saw a major low when he could not make it to the side in 2014. He moved to Essex on Loan and performed well for the new side. He soon regained his spot for the Hampshire unit after his return. 12. Youngest player to score a century When Liam Dawson hit his maiden century for Hampshire back in 2008, he became the youngest player to score a century for Hampshire at the age of 18. 13. Successful stint in Zimbabwe Dawson was phenomenal with the ball when he played First Class cricket in Zimbabwe. It was in the 2012-13 season, when he joined the Mountaineers for the domestic season. He scalped 7/51 on his debut for the team. 14. International debuts Dawson was first named in the national team for the ICC World T20 2016 held in India. He did not get a game though. He made his T20I debut against Sri Lanka in July 2016. He scalped 3 wickets on his debut. His ODI debut came soon after in September 2016 against Pakistan. 15. Some pain, some gain He was named in the team that toured Bangladesh recently. However, he could not get a game in the season. Dawson managed to get a Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) contract though. He turned up for the Rangpur Riders in the BPL 4. He even went on to captain the franchise in one of the league games in absence of regular skipper Naeem Islam.
