South Africa, despite having a formidable lineup, is going through a very rough phase. Despite being in a relatively easier group in the recently concluded ICC Champions Trophy, they failed to make it even to the semis. Now, they are handed a 3-1 drubbing by the Three Lions in the Test Series that concluded on Monday. While many Protean cricketers had a bad tour against England, skipper Faf du Plessis has confirmed that the series was the last opportunity given to all-rounder Jean Paul Duminy a.k.a JP Duminy.
Duminy is finding it tough to get going as he has scored only one half-century in his last eight Test innings. Speaking of Test hundred, you will have to double the previous number of innings to find his hundred. He was given a chance in the first Test against England but failed to make a mark. Such a horrible performance is not expected from a veteran like JP and hence skipper Faf has confirmed that it was his last opportunity.
“When we went to England we thought there might be a possibility that we needed to change the side, and we felt that England was going to be Duminy’s last opportunity, so that didn’t go to plan. The plan was for him to play the whole series, but when he didn’t score we felt it was time to give someone else a run,” said du Plessis as quoted by sacricketmag.com.
Morris is preferred ahead of JP
Owing to the poor run of form of Duminy, another all-rounder Chris Morris got a chance and utilised it well enough. This might be the final nail in the coffin of JP’s Test career as it is highly unlikely that he will be preferred ahead of Chris anytime soon.
“When JP was out it was an opportunity to bring in a bowler and it worked brilliantly in the second Test because Morris came in and scored runs. He’s never going to be required to bowl as many overs as the main bowlers, so the fact that he and Vern scored runs was great for us. Getting that balance between seven batsmen and four bowlers was the toughest task,” said Faf.
